Ian's career in the surface coatings industry began in 1991 as a 14 year old at Brian's Paint Spot in Windsor. It was meant to be a school holiday and weekend job. Almost 30 years later he is still in the industry. Working both in store and on the tools, Ian has exstensive technical knowledge as well as being a skilled applicator in his own right.
A gifted colour matcher, Ian has had the opportunity to work on some amazing projects over the years. When in store he would often be the go-to guy for the hard stuff like: the onsite colour matching of shockcrete in the carpark of The Eastbourne Apartments; or matching the original colours of The Regent Theatre from 1929 during its restoration in 2019. He has even matched 'The Yellow Peril' in Two Pack Polyurethane to make it more graffiti resistant.
A passion for 'why' and 'how' things work has definitely been a driving force behind Ian's career. He is one of the few people at store level who jump at the chance to attend lectures given by the chemists who design the products at industry conferences.
When first put into the protective and automotive department at Footscray Paint Spot in 2005, Ian read all the technical data he could get his hands on. No matter how obscure or irrelevant, he read about it. Just in case he needed to specify a product that could be painted on a large ship under the water line. (Yes. there is such a thing)
In early 2020 Ian decided it was time to head out on his own: offering a complete service. From technical specification and colour consulting, to application and independent inspection.
Ian has been such a great support through my renovation project. I had a very clear idea of the final result, but needed advice on the material to achieve it.
This is where Ian provided his precious advice.
One word on the result: amazing.
